In the High Street is the lovely 15th century Alston Court with mullioned windows, panelled front door and canopied hood.
Abels bridge was originally built of wood in the 15th century dividing Essex from Suffolk. In the 16th century the hump bridge was built to allow barges to navigate the river. It was renovated in 1959, and the keystone transferred from the old bridge bears the letter A and a bell.
Tendring Hall built during the 15th century, is the home of the Rowley family who is the present Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk.
The Guildhall, dates from the 1500's, and is now three private dwellings, and overlooks the square.
Stoke-by-Nayland is one of the Constable country villages and has many timber-framed buildings.
St Mary's church has been used often in landscapes painted by John Constable. There are some interesting tombs and brasses in the church, which is not open on wet days.
The Black Horse Inn is a lovely timber framed building.
