URPoint Details

Travellers can easily be confused when asking directions to be sent to ‘Stoke City’. This was in fact due to the Roman citadel was a convenient staging post near the ford and not far from the camp at Coddenham.
For centuries, the City houses were part of the Thornham estate and they were numbered anti clockwise through the villages round Thornham Magna, those in Stoke Ash being 137-158. In the old days the centre of the village was the pump in the City near the workhouse.

Colsey Wood House was at one time a large H-shaped house with a moat and fish ponds and was home to the Benedictine nuns. Legend has it that it was once joined to Wood Hall.
Wood Hall Manor was first recorded in 1206 and has a moat dating from the late 1300\'s, the present house is dated 1600.
