The charm of this old town can be seen in its winding streets around the hilltop market on the banks of the River Mersey.
Soft water tumbles down from the hills of the Peak District and made the town an ideal cotton spinning centre.
The town has a superb railway viaduct of 27 arches and was opened in 1842 was built by G W Buck at a cost of £70,000 and said to contain 11,000,000 bricks
