Guarding the main north-south and east-west routes across Scotland, Stirling Castle played a major part in the Scottish struggle against English domination.
Time and time again it was besieged, relieved and then besieged once again involving among others, great names like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
It was here that James II murdered the Earl of Douglas and had his body tossed from a window.
The castle was the childhood home of the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots, crowned here in 1543 and narrowly escaped death by fire in 1561.
