Guarding the main north-south and east-west routes across Scotland, Stirling Castle played a major part in the Scottish struggle against English domination.

It was here that James II murdered the Earl of Douglas and had his body tossed from a window.

The castle was the childhood home of the ill-fated Mary Queen of Scots, crowned here in 1543 and narrowly escaped death by fire in 1561.
