According to legend St Cuthman in the 8th century pushed his invalid mother in a wheelbarrow from Devon, and when the barrow broke here, he stayed and built a wooden church.
The present church dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest in Sussex.

A track leads up to Steyning Round Hill and from which you can see over the Adur Valley.
Other walks climb down to Cissbury Ring and Chanctonbury Ring, where a beech wood planted in 1760 stands in an oval prehistoric earthwork.

The Church of St Andrew is magnificent Norman building with later additions from the 12th century and is one of the oldest in Sussex. Once a collegiate church only the nave remains. The west tower replaces the chancel, transepts and central tower which were demolished after 1577. The chancel arch rises to nearly 40ft, the font of carved marble dates from the 12th century. In the south aisle is an interesting the Arms of Queen Anne.
