URPoint Details
The name is sometimes applied to Kirkcudbright and is derived from the lordship of the Balliols when the area was placed under Royal stewardshi, an office once held by the Maxwell family between 1526 and 1747.
The Stewartry along with the county of Wigtown comprise the area known as Galloway.
The Stewartry is the central part of Dumfries and Galloway and includes the towns of Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie and Gatehouse of Fleet .
