URPoint Details

Approaching Stevington between the hedgerows, farmlands slope down to the river where Vikings once spread terror on their journey up the Ouse.
The road winds and climbs upward to the village as described in Bunyan's 'Pilgrims Progress' where he came to the cross at the centre of the limestone village and has remained a thriving community since the first Domesday survey in 1086.

The name comes from one of its earliest inhabitants, Styfa, means the place belonging to Styfa.

The 'Stevington Goose' is yet another legend but this time a 20th century one. A farm at the top of the village had two geese keeping guard on the roadside. One died and some kind person made a wooden cut-out companion to stand by the survivor. He could be seen chatting happily to his wooden mate until one dark night a passing motorist stole the wooden companion.

Stevington Cross is 14th century in the centre of the village, and is the cross depicted in Pilgrims Progress.
