Stanway House & Fountain - Stanway

Stanway House & Fountain - Stanway

Stanway GL54 5PQ, England

URPoint Details

This golden-stone Cotswold manor house built between 1580-1640, set amid parkland in an unspoilt village is very much a home rather than a museum.
Mellow Jacobean architecture, typical squires family portraits, Tudor Great Hall with shuffle board and fine furniture.
Medieval tithe barn and Jacobean gate-house contributes to the timeless charm of what Arthur Negus considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic manor houses in England.
Stanway House is the home of Lord Neidpath, and has been used for location filming, including  "The Buccaneers" by Edith Wharton, shown on British television. It also features in Armisted Maupin's "Tales from the City" series of novels.
Famous historical figures who have stayed there include J.M Barrie, creator of "Peter Pan", who rented Stanway each summer, and who built that quintessential English cricket pavilion - this one, unusually, has a thatched roof Barrie's guests included H.G. Wells, author of "The Time Machine" and other classic science fiction tales, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sheriock Holmes.

Extensive grounds and formal landscapes surround this delightful manor house.
