Stanway, or ‘Stoneway' took its name from the old Roman road Stane Street, running from Bishop's Stortford to Colchester through the centre of the village which is now the London road. This road was much used by pilgrims on their way to Walsingham.
The church of Albright is dated from the 14th century and stands on the site of a Saxon chapel.
Grymes Dyke, is now the only Iron Age dyke in the United Kingdom and forms part of the border of the village.
