URPoint Details
Stansted Mountfitchet Church of St Mary the Virgin (Historic Churches Trust). The medieval church of St Mary the Virgin stands next to the Hall and away from the village, in a peaceful setting despite the nearby motorway and airport. It was founded early in the 12th century and the chancel arch and two doorways are Norman. The brick tower, built in 1692 has a small spire. F T Dollman extensively restored the whole church in 1887-8. Inside there are two exceptionally fine 17th century monuments with effigies; one to wasp-waisted Hester Salusbury dated 1614 in her hunting clothes, the other to her parents, Sir Thomas Middleton dated 1631 who was a Lord Mayor of London and her mother. Designated Grade II* listed building
