An old village, on the slopes of the Stort Valley, set amidst cedar and pine trees. There are some fine and interesting buildings, including the six Elizabethan Baesche Almshouses, with their two-storied brick with three gables. The old Clockhouse School dates from the 17th century with quoins and a tiny cupola, a Victorian mill with a Greek temple roof and the red Lion Inn of the early 17th century with overhanging storeys and gables.

Standstead Bury a picturesque manor house was built in the 15th century and altered every century since.  It has a half-timbered stair-turret and seven bays in the garden front.
