The Romans were here in the 2nd and 3rd centuries and supplied cattle to their forts at Newcastle and South Shields. Stanley remained a small village until high grade coke was discovered in the 18th century.
Causey Arch is the first single-span stone bridge dating from 1727 spans Beamish Burn. The bridge is 105ft long and 85ft high.
