Set high in the moorland the village has an unusual feature that the fossilised tree stump in the churchyard is more than 250 million years old and the stump is 7ft high.
Footpaths lead to open moorland in all directions, and among the pleasant riverside walks is one leading to a medieval bridge a mile upstream.
