The name goes back to Anglo-Saxon times as ‘stan’ meant stoney, a ford across the river Roding. Rivers was added in King John’s time through the Rivers family.
Between Ongar and Toot Hill on the borders of Greensted and Stanford Rivers is the Drill House, and its here you will see a red Victorian letter box in the side of the house wall with the name Repentance on it times of collection notice.
