URPoint Details
A road from London leading to the West country crossed the Thames and Colne rivers where the Romans not only built the road but named this spot Ad Pontes (at the bridges).
There are some fine buildings in the town including the Flemish-style Town Hall in the Market Place, the stone bridge over the River Thames and the church of St Mary with its 17th century base to the tower.
An interesting feature is the London Stone by the river where in 1285 it marked the western boundary of London.
