URPoint Details
The Empress Eugenie built St Michael's Abbey adjacent to Farnborough Hill in 1886 in memory of her husband and son. A year later she built an impressively flamboyant and colourful mausoleum for herself, Emperor Napoleon and their son. Below the dome and reached by an imposing staircase is the vaulted crypt. Both crypt and mausoleum can be visited by prior arrangements. Treasures in the Abbey include several personal relics of the Imperial family. With the status of a Priory, St Michael's Abbey is now a community of English Benedictine monks.
