URPoint Details
A yachtsman’s haven on the Holm Sound.
Running south from the village are the Churchill Barriers – formed by 250,000 tons of rock sunk in the waters in 1939 – which carry a road linking Mainland to the islands of Lamb Holm, Glims Holm, Burray and South Ronaldsay.
Sir Winston Churchill ordered the barriers to be built to block the eastern approach to the naval base of Scapa Flow.
Scapa Flow is about 80 square miles of sheltered waters surrounded by the southern Orkneys.
