Beautifully set among smooth green hills, this 4.5km long loch is used for sailing and fishing.
On the neck of land separating it from Loch of the Lowes, at the south end stands Tibbie Shiel's Inn. The inn was kept by Tibbie Shiel (Elizabeth Richardson, 1783-1878) from 1823 was a meeting place for many 19th century writers.
Beside the road towards the north end of the loch is a statue of James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd and friend of Sir Walter Scott.
