St Mary-in-the-Marsh - Church of St Mary the Virgin
St Mary-in-the-Marsh TN290DG, England
URPoint Details
Like other Marsh churches, it is built on a mound to protect it against floods.
Parts of the church go back to Norman times, including the tower in which hang three pre-Reformation bells.
The grave of E. Nesbit, much loved author of many children’s books is in the churchyard by the side gate. After the death of her first husband she married Captain Bland, one of the founder members of the Fabian Society, who himself made a simple wooden gate to mark her grave. There is a memorial tablet by the font.
