Founded by Jarl Rogvald and dedicated to his uncle, St Magnus and the remains of both men are in the massive east choir piers.
The original building dates from 1137 to 1200, but addition work went on until the late 14th century.
It contains some of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Scotland, with small additions in transitional style and early Gothic.
