St Helen’s became a coal mining in the 16th century, and in the 17th century the Sankey Navigational Canal was built to transport coal to the River Mersey and was the first artificial waterway completed in Britain for 200 years.

The famous orchestral conductor Sir Thomas Beecham was born here in 1879.
