Traditionally associated with St Columba’s arrival in Scotland, the cave contains a rock-shelf with an altar, above which are carved crosses. A large basin, perhaps a Stone Age mortar, may have been used as a font.
The cave was occupied from the middle Stone Age. In front are traces of houses and the ruins of a chapel (possibly 13th century) and another cave is nearby.
