St Clement Danes - London

The Strand WC2R 1DH, England

URPoint Details

A church has been on this site since the 9th century, and it is reputed that King Alfred expelled the Danes from London. Those who had English wives were allowed to stay in this area.

The church was rebuilt by William the Conqueror again in the Middle Ages was not burnt out in the Great Fire, but became unsafe in 1680, and was later rebuilt by Christopher Wren. About 250 years later, the Germans reduced it to rubble.

In 1955 reconstruction began and the R A F adopted it, and W A S Lloyd the architect, produced a design on the Wren concept but cleverly modernised it.
The wide aisle, which contributes so much to the impression of space, is achieved by having telescopic pews which can be pulled out to provide extra seating.
In the paved floor are 750 squadron and unit badges of the R A F.
The famous bells were recast in Whitechapel where they came from originally.
800 hassocks were embroidered and presented by people throughout the world.
The beautiful, movable wrought-iron lectern was a gift from Australia and the original Grinling Gibbons pulpit is now back in its rightful place.
