Once a quiet seaside village it now a busy tourist area and both north and south of the village are superb headland walks along the top of the cliff. St Bees Head is 323ft high and topped by a lighthouse.
St Bees Scholl was founded in 1587 as a grammar school by a local man Edmund Grindal who was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1576
