An imposing and beautiful building, sitting on a hill, was built by the Saxons and where Alban was the first Christian martyr to be executed in AD209.
Remains of the Norman building include the Great Crossing Tower and bricks from the Verulamium.
The Abbey Church of the Benedictine Monastery was founded in 793 and became a Cathedral in 1877.
