URPoint Details
Archaeologists still investigate the site where Iron Age man made the first settlement of the area some 5,000 years ago.
Almost 2000 years ago the invading Roman armies passed by the site, and during the occupation of the country built the first road direct from London to Colchester.
Springfield road is still on that direct line.
The Domesday Book recorded that among other things, Springfield had two flourishing fish ponds which helped feed the residents. One of those ponds still exists close to the boundary of the parish.
Among the Norman invaders who came with William, Sir Walter Tyrell, who was given many estates in the area, is still remembered in the name of Tyrells Close. In the very early 15th century one of his descendants became the first Baronet of Springfield.
