A well known landmark at a height of 1,131ft on the road south eastwards towards Lauder and is at the point where Berwick, East Lothian and Midlothian meet.

The Moorfoot Hills rise away to the south-west while the main ridge of the Lammermuirs, their slope largely given over to sheep.

There are prehistoric remains near Soutra Hill and the road is on the line of an ancient Pilgrims way.

The Romans knew the road across Soutra Hill and used at different times by Edward I, Edward III and James IV of Scotland.

The views are extensive and stretches from the Eildon Hills to the south to the Ochils beyond the Forth estuary, taking in Arthur's Seat overlooking the city.
