URPoint Details
Although so close to Portsmouth, Southwick still retains its peaceful charm and character. There are still some interesting timber-framed houses, some thatch and 18th century buildings.
John Whyte acquired the Augustinian priory at the Dissolution, and the house, founded in 1133 at Portchester and moved here 15 or so years later. He demolished most of the buildings including the church and fashioned a house from the prior’s lodging.
The church is mainly Perpendicular, and has a splendid 18th century painted altar-piece showing cherubs and doves and a 17th century gallery and pulpit. There are some fine brasses to John Whyte from 1567 with his wife and the whole family on top of the tomb.
