The building begun in 1188, has a Saxon tympanum a Norman nave and crossing, an Early English Choir and outstanding foliage carving in the chapter House and Archbishop's Palace ruins. The 16th century brass lectern was retrieved from the lake at Newstead Abbey where it had been thrown at the Dissolution in the 16th century.
