In the 12th century the village was actually two parishes each with its own church standing within one churchyard. One church is dedicated to St Lawrence the other to St Mary.Through the different periods of history the churches have stood side by side for over seven centuries. In 1827, fire destroyed most of the church of St Lawrence. St Mary's church was almost entirely reconstructed in the 14th century and stands proudly beside the remains of St Lawrence's church.
