URPoint Details

The amazing and spectacular Forth Rail Bridge was hailed as the eighth wonder of the world when it was opened in 1890. Designed by Sir William Arroll, more than 4,500 men were employed in its construction. The road bridge opened in 1964, spans 1.5 miles and has towers reaching to 500ft (156m). The best views of the two bridges are undoubtedly from Queensferrry and beyond them across the river the peaks of Ben Ledi, Ben Lomond and the Ochil Hills

Queensferry is an unspoilt town, pleasing in scale and detail. It is a conservation area and is dominated by the tower of the 17th century tolbooth. The busy main street, with its shops and restaurants, terraces and lanes, lies close to the peaceful harbour.

The town's name originates from Queen Margaret, the wife of Malcolm Canmore, King of Scotland from 1057 to 1093. From the Royal Court in Dunfermline (across the Forth), it is said the she crossed the river regularly on the way to and from her chapel in Edinburgh Castle. In 1636 the town became a royal burgh, and Queen Margaret was depicted in the coat of arms.
