South of Scotland

URPoint Details

SOUTH OF SCOTLAND

You can walk the Southern Upland Way from west to east, try mountain biking in forests, or try angling in the many beautiful rivers.

First impressions can be of a surprisingly wild area, though the river valleys of the Scottish Borders with their woodlands and farms soon give a softer appearance. However, if it is ruggedness you want, then head west for Galloway, where, at places like the Galloway Forest Park there is quintessential 'Scottish' scenery of lochs and steep-sided hills. Or head for the Island of Arran, often called Scotland in miniature because it has rocky hill slopes as well as a softer and gentler side.

The typical Galloway towns of wide streets and pastel painted frontages are most attractive and Kircudbright, (pronounced Kircoodbrie) has a long tradition of attracting artists.

In the Scottish Borders, places like Melrose or Kelso offer plenty to do: visiting abbeys or stately homes or museums could take up lots of time. Another distinct feature is the wealth of attractions in Ayrshire and along the Clyde coast. Also worth considering are the ferries to the Cumbrae (excellent for cycling).
