An attractive downland village in wooded farmland, and whose main street is lined with old houses, some of brick, some tile-hung and some Sussex clunch – a local soft limestone.
Anthony Trollope is buried in the churchyard.
The church is Early English in style with the Caryll chapel, desecrated in the Civil War in 1643.
The central tower has a prominent green copper spire.
The stocks and whipping post are still preserved.
