URPoint Details
South Elmham is a group of North Suffolk villages known locally as ‘Saints Country’, which includes Homersfield and Flixton as well as the South Elmham villages of All Saints-cum-St Nicholas, St Cross, St James, St Margaret, St Michael and St Peter.
St Cross is a pretty little village with its ancient church of St George dating back to the 14th century.
St James is the village that tradition says ‘hedged the cuckoo’ in to keep its song to itself. Its church occupies the highest site in Suffolk and is an ancient structure with a Norman devil’s door.
St Margaret is a small village rambles alongside the village green, where the church is an attractive little building of Perpendicular style. The village stocks are in the porch of the church.
St Michael is another small village of open landscape with a Norman church standing on the common.
St Peter is the smallest of the parishes, with a Norman doorway to the church. The ancient Hall of which parts date back to 1250 was the family home of the Tasburghs before they went to Flixton
There is evidence of early settlements in the area with a Bronze Age cremation urn and a magnificent Saxon drinking glass all being found at
