The Church of St Mary is one of the oldest in the country, is mainly Norman but there is considerable Anglo-Saxon work, especially the tower, which is early 11th century. The chancel is mainly Norman with some Anglo-Saxon work, and the north transept is divided by 12th century arches. The chapel is 14th century. The 100ft high tower is unique in England, the pyramid car of shingle having a steep gable rising from it from each wall face, and known as ‘Rhenish helm’, this type of tower is common in villages along the Rhine.
