Best known for the eclectic and often bizarre collection depicting craftsmanship and design, brought together between 1919 and 1951 by its then owner Charles Paget Wade. An architect, poet and craftsman, Wade began by collecting English household objects when still a child, moving on to south European cabinets and church furniture, and Chinese and Japanese craft. By 1940 he had amassed 5,000 items ranging from mousetraps to Japanese armour, many of which he carefully restored himself. Wade's motto was 'Nequid Pereat - Let nothing perish'.
A Cotswold Tudor hall- house of 1500 -remodelled in the late 16th century and again in the 18th century restored by Wade in the 1920s, when plaster ceilings were removed and oak paneling fitted. Some of the unusual contents include umbrellas, clocks, tools and musical instruments, nautical and scientific instruments, engraved glass, toys and model ships.
Terraced garden designed by Baillie Scott and modified by Wade on the site of an old farmyard between 1920 and 1923 small building adjacent to the house and priest's lodging
