The village lies inland from the coast road along the steep side of the valley.
Many houses in its twisting streets have had their walls rendered to hide shell damage.
During the last war villagers evacuated their homes when the US Army took the place over for manoeuvres.
There is an obelisk which recalls battle practice by the U S A forces during the Second World War.
The ruined tower is all that remains of a 14th century a collegiate chantry founded by Sir Guy de Brien one of the first Knights of the Garter and Standard bearer to Edward III.
