Open to end October, Sunday to Thursday 1.30-5.30pm. (Last admission 5pm). Closed Good Friday. Shop and garden open same days from 12.30-5.30pm. Admission charge. Dogs not allowed in garden; guide dogs admitted.

Disabled car parking with level access to garden from car park, some grassy inclines; wheelchair access to most of the garden mainly via gravel paths. Shop: accessible through back door, opened on request; Lower Hall & tearooms accessible, picnic tables with wheelchair access. Garden & first floor suitable for accompanied visually impaired visitors.

The Strickland family have lived here for more than 750 years. This impressive 14th century peel tower was extended in Tudor times, with some of the finest Elizabethan carved overmantels in the country. Contents include good English and French furniture and family portraits.

The castle, set in a large estate and is surrounded by gardens (including the Trust's largest limestone rock garden) of beauty and interest.

The main horticultural attraction is the Westmorland stone rock garden with Japanese maples and dwarf conifers planted in 1926 when the rock garden was
