Sir Walter Raleigh born 22 January 1552 in Hayes Barton. He was an English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, courtier, spy, and explorer. He founded the first colony in Vrginia in 1584-86. While imprisoned, he wrote many treatises and the first volume of The Historie of the World.
Raleigh was beheaded in the Old Palace Yard at the Palace of Westminster on 29 October 1618 (aged 65). "Let us dispatch", he said to his executioner.
