Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie (Rollicking Rollo), was born in Comber in 1766. He was a soldier not only in Ireland but in the West Indies, Java and Nepal, fought duels and acted as a secret agent against the French.
He was killed in action in 1814 leading a hopeless charge by a regiment of the Royal Irish Dragoons against a Nepalese hill fort. There is a statue of him in Comber village square.
