Sir Richard Steele, born in Dublin in 1672 and died 1 September 1729 in Carmarthen, Wales. He joined the army in 1697 but left in 1705 during which time he had started writing. He first wrote for the ‘London Gazette’, then ‘The Tatler’ using the name of Isaac Bickerstaff and later joined ‘The Spectator’. ‘The Funeral’ was written in 1701, ‘The Lying Lover’ in 1703 and ‘The Tender Husband in 1705’.
