Sir Hans Sloane, 16 April 1660 in Killyleagh. He studied medicine in London, then went to France for further study.
It was during a visit to Jamaica in 1687, that he published a catalogue of about 800 plant species.
He was created a Baronet in 1716 and became first physician to King George II.
As a great collector he was able to acquire another great collection from the estate of William Courted. He was President of the Royal Society, 1727-41.
Sloane continued working on his collection and in his will he bequeathed his entire collection to the nation, which forms the nucleus of the British Museum.
He died in London on 11 January 1753.
