Sir Francis Drake was born at Crowndale Farm in 1542.
Buckland Abbey originally a 13th century monastery was ingeniously transformed into a family residence by Sir Richard Grenville of Revenge fame before Drake bought it in 1581.
Drake is said to have finished his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe before defeating the Spanish. He died in Panama in 1596.
