URPoint Details
The village with its stone and white-washed cottages has associations with St Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint. He is said to have baptised converts at the nearby St Mungo’s Well in the 6th century, and the church, which bears his name, contains fragments of the same period.
The Church of St Mungo was built on a slope the steepness of which was not adequately allowed for by the architect. The floor of the nave has a distinct gradient as a result. Originally built in the 13th century it was rebuilt in the mid-19th century by Anthony Salvin.
