Sible Hedingham The 14th century church of St Peter has a monument commemorating Sir John Hawkwood born here in 1320. He was a famous soldier of fortune fighting with the Black Prince. When he died in 1394 in Florence he was given a magnificent state funeral and a monument erected to his honour with the inscription "John Hawkwood a British Knight the most cautious leader of his age". Legend has it that his body was returned to England. There is a picture of the Florentine Memorial in the church.
