URPoint Details
In the heart of the medieval town this lovely St Mary’s Church, (Churches Conservation Trust) stands at its highest point, and is believed to have been founded by King Edgar about 970 on an Anglian church site. It later became a college and retained the dignity of a Royal Peculiar until the 19th century. Rebuilt around 1150, then enlarged and enhanced again and again through the years and it shows signs of almost every architectural style from the 12th century to the 19th century. A great feature of the church is its superb glass of various periods.
