Situated in the Derwent Valley where the upper reached of the river have been dammed to form the Derwent Reservoir, a beautifully located spot for bird-watching and fishing.
The single arched bridge spans the water linking Durham and Northumberland.
A house in Wood Street, dated 1691, has an inscription in German recalling some Solingen sword-makers who came here as refugees.
St Andrew’s Church, (Churches Conservation Trust) Sitting 960ft high on Grey Mare Hill, the cruciform church has a bell-cote, and was built in 1769 on a much older site. Inside it is a simple and appealing little church, with sturdy stone ribs over the crossing. As well as some fine 18th century head stones in the churchyard there is the fantastic domed structure of the Hopper Mausoleum erected in 1752 with obelisks above and statues in carved niches on the sides.
