In 1899 it was a ship that lay just off Shotley Gate then a hospital was built on the shore, followed in 1903 by the building of a main shore establishment. The main feature is the 142ft mast which is now a protected monument. In the naval days a junior rating could often be seen sitting on top of the mast, reading a book.
Shotley is made up of several hamlets all mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.
