URPoint Details
Standing by one of the important fords across the Thames, the village was a Royal Borough from the time of King Alfred, who held a meeting of his Great Council there.
St Mary's Church and the base of an Anglo-Saxon preaching cross standing beside it, lie in a churchyard islanded in a field. One of the two bells dates from the 13th century, and is one of the three oldest in Oxfordshire. The churchwarden's staff was presented by Mrs Birch, wife of the then vicar and the first lady churchwarden in the country.
