The Domesday Book records Sheringham as Silingeham, although there may have been a settlement here before that.
In 1956 Romano-British pottery kilns were uncovered as was clay bars and pottery which are now in the Norwich Castle Museum.
The Ancient Borough of Sheringham became the two distinct parishes of Upper and Lower Sheringham in 1901 (Lower being the seaside resort and old fishing village).
One of the most attractive small towns where the main street is lined by Georgian buildings mostly built after the fire of 1708.
